Cubs: Ryne Sandberg has hit .307 (39-for-127) since announcing on Aug. 2 that he would retire at the end of the season. He has not committed a throwing error since June 8, 1994, a span of 273 games. His .989 fielding percentage is the all-time best for second basemen.
Indians: The first-game crowd of 42,854 brought season attendance to 3,318,943, breaking the 1-year-old club mark. Kevin Seitzer, who sprained his ankle stepping on a baseball during batting practice Friday, begged manager Mike Hargrove to play, but he said no.
Mariners: Every regular was back in the lineup with the exception of designated hitter Edgar Martinez, who has sore ribs. Martinez is expected to play today.
Red Sox: Nomar Garciaparra had four at-bats to give him 678, the highest single-season total in club history. Jim Rice held the previous record of 677 at-bats in 1978.
