Severn's Dennard Melton is in the spotlight for Week 2 in high school football. Melton scored three touchdowns to tie the county career mark (51) as the Admirals opened with a 26-7 victory over Bullis Prep last week.
Severn's option quarterback scored on a 70-yard run, an 8-yard interception return. Touchdown No. 51 came on a 2-yard dive, tying Southern's Bob Stach (1964-66) and Arundel's Troy Turner (1983-85) for career touchdowns.
A two-point conversion run gave Melton 320 career points moving him into second place passing Turner (316) and trailing Stach (348) by only 28 points.
Severn fans will have to make the long haul to Frostburg tomorrow to see Melton set the record. The Admirals visit Beall (1-0) for a 1 p.m. contest in the only Saturday game involving a county team.
Melton also picked off two passes and has 13 career interceptions; the county record is 16 by South River's Tom Bresnahan.
Today's games
Top-ranked St. Mary's, No. 10 Annapolis and No. 12 North County all opened with victories, but the county's other ranked team, No. 8 Meade, is looking to even its record at 1-1.
St. Paul's at St. Mary's: The Saints ripped Pallotti of Laurel, 31-8, as senior FB/MLB Ernie Listman dominated on both sides of the ball. Listman ran for 102 yards and two touchdowns, made 10 tackles and had two sacks.
Visiting St. Paul's was a 6-0 loser to Baltimore's Douglass. Game time: 7 p.m. at Anne Arundel Community College.
Paint Branch at No. 10 Annapolis: Coach Roy Brown's Panthers were impressive with their first season-opening victory since 1994 by 28-7 over Largo. Donnell Foote, who just might be the county's best athlete playing football, scored three touchdowns.
Game time: 7: 30 p.m. at Annapolis. Don't be late; this could be a fast game. The Montgomery countians threw one pass in their opening 34-13 win over Magruder.
Eleanor Roosevelt at North County: In contrast, No. 12 North County appears to have found its passer in senior Mike Parks, the fourth to try out for the position since Aug. 15. Parks completed 15 of 33 for 221 yards and two touchdowns in the Knights' 21-0 triumph over Westminster.
The Knights' posted a shutout, but this is the real test. Game time: 7 p.m. in Ferndale. The Prince George's County team has a real offense, as evidenced by its 63-20 romp over McDonough of Charles County. Kevin Brooks (6 feet, 205 pounds) rushed for 150 yards and three touchdowns in Roosevelt's opener.
Meade at Friendly: Meade coach Mark Frye's debut was spoiled, 26-14, by Lake Clifton last week. Tonight's game could be even )) tougher for the Mustangs.
Friendly stunned highly touted Oxon Hill and four-year tailback Walter Cross, 27-8. Cross, who came into the game with career rushing totals of 3,544 yards and 37 touchdowns, did not score.
It will be interesting to see how the Friendly defense, led by Corey Yancy, Nate Turner and Terry Reed, compares to Lake Clifton's. Clifton limited Meade's marquis running back Tanardo Sharps to 99 yards rushing, 65 on a touchdown run, and a 79-yard kickoff return for six points.
"Clifton beat us up pretty good on the line," said Frye. "Everybody knew our offensive line was questionable. Tanardo is exciting, but he's just one kid, and if our line doesn't come along soon, it's going to be a long season."
Meade has Oxon Hill and Cross next week, so tonight's game is huge. Game time: 7 p.m. at the Prince George's County school.
Sherwood at Arundel: This is a chance to see the two-time defending Class 4A state champion, Sherwood, a (34-7 winner over Springbrook last week). Sherwood is attempting to become just the third school to win three consecutive state titles. Arundel lost, 14-13, to Northern last week. Game time: 7: 30 p.m. in Gambrills.
Other games
Severna Park, Broadneck, South River and Southern are other county teams looking to go 2-0.
Severna Park at Westminster: The Falcons, a 43-37 winner over Laurel, hopes its high-powered offense is not slowed by festivities at Westminster.
The Carroll countians are celebrating 50 years of football, with a could-be-lengthy halftime that will include Gerald Richter, 92, the retired principal who began the program. If coach Andy Borland's Falcons survive the wait, they should prevail.
Glen Burnie at Broadneck: The Class 3A Bruins, who started with a 34-6 rout of Old Mill, plays host to Glen Burnie, a 36-19 loser to Class 2A South River.
Chesapeake at South River: entertains Class 4A Chesapeake (lost 28-22 to LaPlata) at Joe Papetti Field in Edgewater.
Southern-Harwood at South Carroll: After a 40-16 romp over Queen Anne's, Southern goes after win No. 2 at South Carroll, a 28-7 winner over Glenelg last week.
Two 0-1 teams also play: Old Mill at Northeast, and Chesapeake-BC at Spalding.
