On the field: Brady Anderson was hit on the back by a Calvin Maduro fastball in the third inning. He bent over for a couple of seconds before straightening up and walking to first. It was the 10th time Anderson has been hit this year, moving him into a tie with Minnesota's Pat Meares for the American League lead.
In the dugout: Manager Davey Johnson again had Geronimo Berroa hitting third against a right-hander. Johnson wants a right-handed bat to break up the left-handed trio of Brady Anderson, Roberto Alomar and Rafael Palmeiro, who hit fourth. Alomar is a switch-hitter, but has been batting from the left side exclusively because of his sore shoulder.
In the clubhouse: "I was hoping you'd say that before now." -- Cal Ripken, on being told his election to the All-Star Game really makes him a third baseman now.
