Tournament field takes shape Final-day upsets could scramble seeding positions

The NCAA Division I men's lacrosse tournament picture became a little clearer yesterday.

After the dust settled on a wild final regular-season day, the 12-team Division I tournament is basically set except for the final seed. The official tournament bids will be announced tonight on Home Team Sports at 7 p.m.

The top four teams, which will receive first-round byes, are expected to be Princeton, Virginia, Syracuse and Johns Hopkins. Princeton and Syracuse will probably play their quarterfinal games in Hempstead, N.Y., and Virginia and Johns Hopkins in College Park.

"I think they got a winner with us," Hopkins coach Tony Seaman said. "Go send us to Hofstra and we might draw 9,000 people like we did on a Tuesday night earlier this year. Or you could send us to College Park, where you might get 20,000."

The other four seeds that were set before yesterday were Duke, Loyola, Georgetown and Notre Dame. The Hoyas, who hurt their seeding with an 11-10 loss to Lehigh, ended their regular season with back-to-back losses for the first time in 11 years.

Maryland solidified itself as the ninth team while knocking out UMBC, 12-10. The Terrapins seem to be the team without a seed since they are 0-4 against teams currently ranked in the Top 10, but have one-goal losses to Virginia and Duke.

The final three spots have come down to Brown, Massachusetts, Hofstra and Army, with UMBC and Penn State holding outside shots.

Brown, which has significant victories at Syracuse and at Duke, lost to Massachusetts, 9-4, yesterday. Several coaches said both teams should make the tournament, leaving one last slot open.

Hofstra and Army each lost to unranked teams.

UMBC and Penn State, both of which have played weaker schedules than the other contenders, dropped close games to Top 10 teams yesterday.

In the first round, expect Loyola, Maryland, Georgetown and Notre Dame to play at Towson's Minnegan Stadium. That would place Duke, Brown, Massachusetts and the 12th seed in West Point, N.Y.

"I think you'll see either Georgetown or Loyola playing Maryland," Loyola coach Dave Cottle said. "If it's not Maryland, we'll probably be playing a team we've already played, like either Brown, Massachusetts or Notre Dame."
