White Sox update
The White Sox enter Baltimore having lost three times in a four-game home series against the New York Yankees and as losers in 10 of their past 13 games. Hitting .243 with a measly .351 slugging percentage through Sunday, Chicago continues to miss third baseman Robin Ventura, who suffered a broken leg during spring training. Frank Thomas drove in a run in last night's 4-3 loss to the Yankees, but he and Albert Belle have combined for just two home runs and 19 RBIs in 140 at-bats, and Thomas has yet to homer in 66 at-bats, the longest season-opening drought of his career. The White Sox also have played the worst defense in the American League, having committed almost twice as many errors (17) as they have turned double plays (10). The White Sox pummeled the Orioles, 9-3, last Wednesday night, but were dominated by Mussina on Thursday night. Mussina allowed only three hits in eight innings of a 1-0 win. Afterward, White Sox manager Terry Bevington quipped, "Mussina usually pitches really good against us once a year, then we go out and get him." Tonight, Mussina will get a rematch against Darwin, last Thursday's hard-luck loser.
