No computer experience is required to operate CareerNet, a touch screen, one-stop shop to explore career information and search for employment.
The online system at Carroll County Business & Employment Resource Center in Westminster has been helping workers find jobs and jobs find workers since December.
CareerNet offers access to job listings nationwide on the Web pages of America's Job Bank and Visions. It also provides access to information on labor market trends, which includes salary data and occupation demand.
"It's a good tool for people exploring different careers. It's very easy to use," said Denise Beaver, manager of the center on Center Street.
CareerNet is a federally funded, state-operated partnership of the U.S. Department of Labor, state agencies, community colleges and private groups.
The center is one of 70 in the state that have been selected to be part of CareerNet, Maryland's One-Stop Career Development System. The service is available free to all employers and residents.
Provided in conjunction with the Maryland Job Service, CareerNet's six work stations occupy a renovated room on the center's second floor. Eight other stations are set up at the Maryland Job Service on Airport Drive in Westminster.
"We're anticipating more and more use of CareerNet," said Jim ** Mayola, manager of the Carroll County office of the Maryland Job Service. "As time goes on, it will evolve."
Carroll Community College will also have CareerNet work stations by the end of the year.
The Resource Center work stations are available to help patrons with software applications and to teach Wordperfect, Lotus and Windows programs. The center has more than 700 career development and job search resources that include workshops, books, newspapers, audiotape and videotape libraries.
The mission of the Business and Employment Resource Center is to "develop a highly effective work force for new and existing businesses, to assist individuals in achieving employment and to encourage lifelong learning."
Formerly known as the Job Training Partnership Administration, the Resource Center gets about 5,000 client visits annually.
"We're a good resource for people. Its really helpful to network with other people who are looking for work," Beaver said.
The Resource Center will hold a ribbon-cutting and open house May 14 to showcase its improvements and CareerNet.
The center is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fridays.
