NAACP leader to speak at fund-raiser

NAACP President Kweisi Mfume will be the featured speaker April 30 at Howard County's Jefferson-Jackson Dinner, the local Democratic Party's biggest annual fund-raiser.

Mfume, a five-term member of the House of Representatives from Baltimore and former chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, has worked to reinvigorate the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People since he took over the presidency more than a year ago.

In that time, he has erased a $3.2 million debt and launched an ambitious agenda on civil rights and other issues.

His autobiography, "No Free Ride: From the Mean Streets to the Mainstream," was published last year.

"He's always been one of my heroes," said Carole Fisher, chairwoman of Howard's Democratic Central Committee. "He's a terrific guy."

The event, which costs $50 a ticket, begins at 6: 30 p.m. April 30 at the Columbia Inn in Columbia Town Center.

Gov. Parris N. Glendening, U.S. Sen. Paul S. Sarbanes, U.S. Rep. Benjamin L. Cardin, Maryland Attorney General J. Joseph Curran Jr. and state Comptroller Louis L. Goldstein also are expected as guests.
