Fourteen Eastern Shore residents were arrested this week in a sweep that targeted immigrants convicted of violent crimes and drug offenses, federal immigration officials said yesterday.
Those arrested in "Operation High Intensity" were being held at the Wicomico County Detention Center, awaiting deportation proceedings, said John Shallman, a spokesman for the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service in Baltimore.
L INS agents periodically round up batches of criminal aliens.
Last year they arrested 776 such people in the Baltimore region.
Those arrested this week had been convicted of criminal charges such as narcotics violations, sexual assault, battery and aggravated assault -- all offenses that qualify them for deportation, Shallman said.
They had come to the United States from such countries as Guatemala, Cuba, Mexico, Jamaica, Israel and Zaire, he said.
