Man charged with abducting, assaulting pair

A hitchhiker armed with a screwdriver allegedly forced a South County couple to drive him around Annapolis looking for illegal drugs for 4 1/2 hours early Sunday, county police said.

Edward Dondie Wells, 40, of the 300 block of Fiddlers Hill Road was charged with two counts each of second-degree assault and kidnapping.

Michael Kenneth Smith, 40, of Mayo and Brenda Lee Lamb, 36, of Edgewater told police that they were on Forest Drive in Annapolis about 4 a.m. when they picked up a hitchhiker.

When the man got into the vehicle, he pulled out a screwdriver and ordered Smith to drive him to several locations in Bywater, outside Annapolis, where he bought illegal drugs, police said. Smith told police that the man smoked crack cocaine while Smith was driving, then became violent.

Smith told police that he pulled over on Fiddlers Hill Road in Edgewater, and the man began punching him, police said.

About 8: 30 a.m., Officer Mervin Pentz saw Smith's vehicle on the shoulder. When the officer stopped, a man ran into the woods off Muddy Creek Road, police said. Pentz chased him and called for other officers, who found the man and arrested him, police said.
