Hits and misses

On the field: Roberto Alomar needed only 1 1/2 innings to remind Orioles fans why he is so valuable. After singling in the first inning, Alomar saved Rafael Palmeiro an error in the second by backing up the first baseman on an ordinary-looking grounder. When the ball squirted past Palmeiro, Alomar calmly threw to Mike Mussina covering.

In the dugout: Manager Davey Johnson returned catcher Chris Hoiles to the lineup after penciling in Lenny Webster before Thursday night's rainout. Webster was to be paired with Scott Erickson, who has never raved over Hoiles' receiving.

In the clubhouse: "The sooner we get past all this, the better off we'll all be. It's the proverbial beating a dead horse." -- Johnson, on continuing questions about Alomar's return from a five-game suspension.
