Plane flown by student pilot crashes, injuring instructor

A small plane was blown off course and crashed into a cornfield yesterday at Lee Airport in the 3000 block of Solomons Island Road in Edgewater as the student pilot was practicing landings and take-offs.

Leroy Nelson, 61, the student pilot, was not injured. Carl Stanat, 51, of the 12000 block of Fernwood Turn, a flight instructor with Fort Meade Flying Activity, suffered a bloody nose, police said.

Nelson of the 8500 block of Imperial Drive in Laurel had landed and taken off twice without any problems, police said. But a strong gust of wind blew the plane off course on the third try, even though both men were wrestling with the controls.

Charles Kirsch, manager of Fort Meade Flying Activity, said he could not provide details on Stanat's flying record because the Federal Aviation Administration, which is investigating the crash, has Stanat's file.
