Girl trapped under auto injured as rescuers lifting it lose grip

A 12-year-old Manchester girl sustained chest injuries when the car she was trapped under yesterday fell on her while rescuers were lifting it.

The girl, who lives on Maiden Lane and whose name was not released, was being treated last night at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, where her condition was not immediately available. Her injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, said a spokesman for the Carroll County Emergency Fire Board.

The girl was attempting to retrieve a ball from under a car behind a house in the 3200 block of Main St. about 5: 30 p.m. when she became stuck beneath the vehicle's differential. As friends or family members lifted the car to free her, they lost their grip and the vehicle fell on the girl's chest, the spokesman said.

The Manchester Fire Department and Rescue Squad arrived minutes later and freed the girl after inflating an air bag placed under the car.

The girl was taken by ambulance to the town's carnival grounds, where a state police MedEvac helicopter transported her to Hopkins' pediatric intensive care unit.
