A 21-year-old University of Maryland College Park student from Anne Arundel County was found dead yesterday afternoon in a campus fraternity house.
The body of Donald Gene Castleberry, who is from Millersville, was found by his roommate in the Delta Tau Delta fraternity house, according to Mary Brock, a spokeswoman for the University of Maryland police. The cause of death was not known last night, she said.
"There was no indication of foul play," Brock said. "We won't know the cause of death until the coroner's report is released." That report is expected to be completed tomorrow.
The dead student's roommate, whom authorities would not name, called police to the Delta Tau Delta fraternity house on the University's Fraternity Row about 4 p.m., Brock said. He told police Castleberry had stopped breathing.
At least two students shared the room where Castleberry was found, Brock said. "He was found in his bed," the spokeswoman said. "At first, his roommate thought he was asleep."
Attempts by the roommate and firefighters to resuscitate Castleberry were unsuccessful, Brock said. Fire officials estimated he had been dead for 12 hours.
Castleberry was last known to have been seen alive at a barbecue at the fraternity house Friday night, Brock said. At least 15 university students live in the house, she added.
Residents were moved to another fraternity house and offered counseling as campus police searched the Delta Tau Delta fraternity house for evidence yesterday.
"There were two counselors on the scene shortly after campus police were notified of the death," Brock said. The students "needed to be in a quiet place where they deal with things," she said.
