BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Darris Kilgour scored five goals, added two assists and helped the Buffalo Bandits secure a playoff berth by defeating the Baltimore Thunder, 19-14, last night in a Major Indoor Lacrosse League game at the Marine Midland Arena.
Buffalo will face Rochester in the first round of the playoffs.
The Bandits (6-4) outscored the Thunder (2-8) three out of four quarters, by one goal in the first and second quarters and by four in the final quarter in the season finale.
The Thunder's Kyle Goundrey opened the scoring in the first minute, but Buffalo responded with three goals. Two Bandits goals were overruled on crease violations before the Thunder's Kip Fulks cut the Bandits' lead to 3-2. Kilgour and the Thunder's Tim Hormes traded goals before Baltimore's Bob Martino tied the score 4-4, then Kilgour gave Buffalo a 5-4 edge at the quarter's end.
Jeff Willis scored a short-handed goal to tie the score again, two minutes into the second. The Bandits' sixth goal came out of the net of Tom Phair, but Baltimore's Jeff Klodzen answered. Baltimore goalie Derek Collins made 11 second-quarter saves, but the Bandits had a 9-7 advantage at the half.
The Bandits took a four-goal lead in the third quarter before the Thunder went on a three-goal scoring run to pull within 12-11.
Dean Cecconi and Kilgour each scored twice in the final frame to seal the win.
