Boardman returns to Spirit's fold Defensive needs lead team to recall St. Paul's coach

The Spirit brought back an old friend just before the Monday midnight deadline for making roster changes before the National Professional Soccer League playoffs.

Defender Steve Boardman, 32, who scored 55 points for the Spirit in 1992-93, signed for the rest of the season. Now coach of St. Paul's soccer teams, Boardman last played, if only briefly, in the NPSL after being traded to the Harrisburg Heat in the Franklin McIntosh deal in December 1994.

"With Ronnie Simmons bothered by an old hip injury and Jason Dieter struggling with a new knee injury, we wanted to find someone who could step in as a defender should either injury diminish our roster," general manager Drew Forrester said.

Dieter, recently back after missing seven games following arthroscopic surgery on his left knee, is probable for the three games this weekend despite a sprained right knee.

In another transaction, Harrisburg traded Domenic Mobilio to the Edmonton Drillers for cash. Mobilio, the old Baltimore Blast's fourth all-time leading scorer with 261 points, will be here for Edmonton's game against the Spirit Friday at Baltimore Arena.
