Winners: Four of the top six growth businesses in 1996 were high-tech industries: Internet service, computers, pager services RTC and cellular telephone services. But American Business Information Inc., which compiled the list, said two decidedly lower-tech businesses -- bagel shops and tattoo parlors -- were also among the big growth industries.

Money isn't everything: Young molecular biologists aren't in it for the money, according to a Roper Starch survey of 300 biologists aged 18 to 32. While these biologists earn an average $18,600 a year, only 5 percent believe wealth is a measure of success in their field. What counts more: published articles, grants, prestige among their colleagues and making an important contribution to science.
