Finalists vie to wield baton in Annapolis

The Annapolis Symphony Orchestra has named four men who will vie for the post of music director, each conducting a concert next season before the final decision is made in March 1998.

Almost 300 people applied to replace Gisele Ben-Dor, whose other commitments have prompted her to make this her last season with the ASO. The finalists are:

Leslie Dunner, resident conductor of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and music director of the Nova Scotia Symphony Orchestra in Halifax

David Effron, longtime music director of the Eastman Philharmonia, conductor of the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, and the new music director of the Brevard Music Center, a summer arts festival in North Carolina

Miguel Harth-Bedoya, in his fourth season with the New York Youth Symphony Orchestra and newly selected music director of the Eugene Symphony Orchestra in Oregon

Steven Smith, a composer and violinist who is music director of the San Juan Symphony in Colorado and New Mexico, assistant conductor for the Cleveland Orchestra and associate conductor of the Kansas City Orchestra.
