State fire marshals have not determined the cause of a fire that sent two Sykesville residents to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation yesterday, authorities said.
Fred Sipe, 68, of the 1400 block of Arrington Road, was in guarded condition after being flown by state police helicopter to the Baltimore Regional Burn Center at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The fire began about 9: 30 a.m. in a mattress in Sipe's third-floor attic bedroom and heavy smoke spread through the log-style home, fire marshals said.
Flames were out when 30 firefighters from Sykesville, Gamber and West Friendship in Howard County arrived minutes later, fire marshals said.
Damage was estimated at $2,000.
