Spring break

What the Orioles did yesterday: The schedule had to be rearranged because of a heavy morning rainfall. All but eight of the pitchers in camp threw off the covered mounds, while the catchers and early-arriving position players hit in the batting cages. Coach Ray Miller held a 30-minute indoor meeting with the pitchers.

What they're doing today: Players take the field at 10 a.m. for stretching, followed by fielding drills and routine pitching

workouts. Second baseman Roberto Alomar is expected to arrive in camp early to get treatment for a sprained ankle.

You know it's spring training when: Manager Davey Johnson was raving yesterday about relatively unknown minor-league pitcher Julio Moreno and reminiscing about his first look at a young Dwight Gooden. Johnson loves evaluating young pitchers and he claims that the difference in the quality of the young arms between this year and last year is like night and day.
