A Columbia nursery school and church have gained approval from the Howard County Planning Board to expand their facilities -- the school for an elementary program, the church for a new sanctuary and day care center.
The Julia Brown Montessori School, in Hickory Ridge village on the north side of Owen Brown Road, asked for permission to enlarge its preschool facility to include grades one, two and three.
According to the petition submitted to the Planning Board, the three new grades would enroll up to 18 students, all of whom would have finished the school's kindergarten.
The Planning Board denied the school's first petition in November and recommended that the school redesign the site, putting an addition at the rear of the building.
In their new petition, school officials instead proposed a two-story addition to the front, which was approved by the board at its meeting Thursday.
The design also calls for a drop-off lane in front of the school and a 14-space parking lot in the rear of the building.
At the same meeting, the Planning Board gave St. Stephen's African Methodist Episcopal Church permission to build a religious facility and day care center on the property used for a church. The existing building will be replaced by a sanctuary and multipurpose building.
The church, on the south side of Mayfield Avenue in Long Reach village, also is proposing to lease or obtain an easement on 19,174 square feet of land owned by the county.
The land behind the church would be used for a 37-space parking lot.
Terms of the lease or easement have not been finalized and need to be approved by the county.
