Three workers injured in fire at Sparrows Point

A two-alarm fire at Bethlehem Steel Corp. injured three workers yesterday and caused extensive damage to machinery in the tin mill at Sparrows Point, Baltimore County fire officials and a company spokesman said.

The fire was reported at 1: 35 a.m. and brought under control about 3 a.m.

Two mill workers sustained minor injuries, and a third suffered chest pains after the fire started on a chromic acid line. They were treated at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore and released.

"The fire will not affect production at the mill," said Ted Baldwin, spokesman for Bethlehem Steel. "It damaged a single line of chrome-plating equipment, but we have three or four other machines that do the same job."

Fire officials said the fire appeared to be accidental, but the cause remained under investigation yesterday.

Damage estimates were unavailable.
