2 hurt as tractor-trailer strikes an auto on U.S. 1

Traffic along U.S. 1 in Jessup was stalled for two hours yesterday morning when a tractor-trailer slammed into a car during the rush hour, Howard County police said.

About 5: 50 a.m., a man driving a 1986 Plymouth Horizon, identified as James Cox, 22, of the 900 block of Park Avenue of Laurel, pulled out of the Maple Village Trailer Park near Mission Road to head south on U.S. 1, police said.

Police said Cox was trying to cross the northbound lanes on U.S. 1 when his car was struck by a 1993 Ford tractor-trailer driven by Charles Born, 43, of the 6600 block of Gena Place in Elkridge.

Born was not injured in the accident, but Cox and his passengers -- Jackie Huntington, 30, who lives in the Jessup trailer park, and an unidentified 1-year-old boy -- were taken by helicopter to the Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.

A fire department spokesman said Cox and Huntington were seriously injured in the accident, though the baby was unharmed.

The incident is under investigated, and no charges have been filed, police said.
