Prudential picks BWHealth as cardiology care provider But members can keep their current specialist

Prudential HealthCare of the Mid-Atlantic announced yesterday that it had selected BWHealth, a partnership of Helix Health and the Medlantic Healthcare Group, to provide cardiology services, including catheterization, angioplasty and open-heart surgery.

The surgery would be performed at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, part of the Helix group, or Washington Hospital Center, a Medlantic hospital. The agreement covers most of the 300,000 Prudential members in the Baltimore-Washington area. Cardiologists currently in the Prudential network have been admitted to the BWHealth network, so Prudential members already seeing a cardiologist will be able to continue their treatment.

Elizabeth J. Misek, chief executive officer of Prudential Mid-Atlantic, said that for highly specialized services, "managed-care organizations like ours are looking for providers that have a track record, good outcomes, experience, access for our members and price. Price alone would not prevail." In such arrangements, managed-care insurers typically get what amounts to a volume discount.

Gerry Blair, director of marketing for Helix, said the five-hospital group will begin advertising its cardiology services this month.
