Ziegenfuss commits to VCU, expects to play as freshman Top county, Liberty scorer awarded full scholarship; Girls soccer

Liberty soccer standout Shanna Ziegenfuss has orally accepted a full athletic scholarship to attend and play at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond next fall.

Carroll County's all-time leading goal scorer with 77 in her outstanding four-year career, Ziegenfuss led the Lions (15-0-3) to a share of the Class 3A-2A state championship in November -- a first for girls soccer in the county. Liberty and South River played to a 0-0 double overtime tie in the final.

In earning co-Metro Player of the Year honors, she scored 24 goals and added eight assists as a senior -- including nine goals and three game-winners in the playoffs.

Virginia Commonwealth, an NCAA Division I school, finished 10-9 last fall, playing in the competitive Colonial Athletic Association. Second-year coach Lisa Zifcak expects Ziegenfuss to make an immediate impact as a starter up front.

It appears to be an ideal situation for Ziegenfuss, who also considered University of Connecticut, South Carolina, and James Madison, among others.

"I like the coach and all the players. On my visit, I had a good time," she said. "They said I would be the go-to player up top, and I hope to fill that role. They're working their way up to the Top 20, playing in the Colonial against some strong teams, like James Madison and George Mason. It's a building program. They also had my major [physical education], and it's a very good academic school."

Ziegenfuss is a two-time Carroll Player of the Year and a first-team All-County selection all four years.
