Players to watch:
Grant Wistrom, Nebraska: He and fellow defensive end Jared Tomich have combined for 14 1/2 of the Huskers' 47 sacks. Wistrom has 20 tackles for losses.
Jim Druckenmiller, Virginia Tech: The senior quarterback threw for 2,071 yards, 17 TDs and just six interceptions and led the Big East in total offense.
Nebraska 17, Colorado 12: Colorado drove to the Nebraska 29 on its final series, Koy Detmer's fourth-down pass fell incomplete with 2: 53 remaining and the Cornhuskers ran out the clock.
Virginia Tech 21, Miami 7: Keion Carpenter scored on a 100-yard interception return with 1: 54 remaining, ending Miami's bid to tie the game and making the Hokies the first Big East team to beat the Hurricanes in the Orange Bowl.
Outlook: A stunning loss to Texas dropped Nebraska to No. 6 and robbed it of a Sugar Bowl berth. This is the Cornhuskers' NCAA-record 28th straight bowl appearance, including 16 in a row in a major bowl or New Year's Day game. Nebraska also is looking for its fourth straight 11-win season, and this is the first time in 12 years that its bowl opponent is not ranked in the top five. No. 10 Virginia Tech has a strong running game (its tailbacks combined for 1,938 yards and 22 TDs) and a fine passer in Druckenmiller.
