Dec. 29: Almost Highwaymen -- On Saturday evening as two gentlemen were riding in the road, beyond the Belvidere bridge near Greenmount Cemetery, they were overhauled by five or six youths, some seventeen or eighteen years of age, with what intent can only be guessed.
Dec. 31: MR. POE -- The New York Tribune states that the distressing accounts of Mr. Poe's illness and suffering, if they have not been from the first greatly exaggerated, are no longer applicable to this situation. He is steadily though slowly recovering his health, and is engaged at his usual literary avocations.
Jan. 4, 1847: The new Protestant Episcopal Church, at Marlboro, Md., was dedicated to the worship of Almighty God on Friday.

Dec. 29: The bad taste of the city's water supply is so obtrusive that the discussion of remedies is in order. Boiling no doubt kills the disease germs, if any, in it, but does not correct the evil taste and odor.
Dec. 31: By an act of the Legislature of 1882 the Maryland Historical Society was made the custodian of all the State records, archives and documents bearing dates prior to the acknowledgment of the independence of the United States by Great Britain.
Jan. 1, 1897: "Ring out the old: ring in the new." The streets were full of merrymakers from shortly after midnight until the chimes and the blowing of whistles and the general din announced the transit of Father Time and a new period in the calendar of the centuries.

Dec. 31: Money as well as wine will flow abundantly tonight as Baltimore bids adieu to the old year and welcomes 1947 with a cacophony of noise both in hotels and night spots and on the streets.
Jan. 1, 1947: Opening the biggest money bags, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer went on a mammoth shopping spree when it turned out "Till the Clouds Roll By," the new offering at Loew's Century Theater.
Jan. 2: London, Jan. 1 (AP) -- A Government spokesman today denied the latest crop of rumors about Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip -- that the Cabinet had discussed the possibility of their engagement and that dominion Prime Ministers had been secretly asked for comment.
