Girl, 15, killed, 3 friends hurt in Arnold crash Car hit tree; police blame speed, driver error

A 15-year-old girl was killed and three of her friends were seriously injured Thursday when the car they were riding in flew out of control and slammed into a tree on Mago Vista Road in Arnold.

Kristen Laine Gough of the 1100 block of Ramblewood Drive of Arnold suffered severe head injuries in the accident and died shortly before midnight at Anne Arundel Medical Center.

The driver, David Nicholas Shupe, 17, of the 1500 block of Star Pine Drive in Arnold, was in critical condition yesterday, and Erin Posson, 14, of the 1100 block of Silverleaf Drive in Arnold was in serious condition, both at Maryland Shock Trauma Center.

Erin's twin, Brynn Alexandria Posson, was in stable condition at Anne Arundel Medical Center.

Police said the 1986 Pontiac Firebird that Shupe was driving was speeding north on Mago Vista near Match Point Drive shortly before 10 p.m. when it crossed into the southbound lane to pass a 1988 Volkswagen Fox.

But the VW, driven by Peter Joseph Lally Jr., 25, of the 300 block of Volley Court in Arnold was turning left onto Match Point and clipped the right rear panel of the Firebird, police said.

Shupe lost control of the Firebird, and it skidded off the road and across two lawns, then slammed head-on into a tree, police said.

Shupe and Brynn Posson, in the front seat, were wearing seat belts, but Erin Posson and Gough were not. Police blamed the accident on excessive speed and driver error.
