Caesar's Palace tribute a truly flashy Vegas gig


You may want to check out all that jazz on ABC tonight.

"Roots: The Gift" (1 p.m.-3 p.m., WBAL, Channel 11) -- LeVar Burton and Louis Gossett Jr. are reunited in a "Roots" off-shoot, as Kunta Kinte and Fiddler are asked to help runaway slaves escape to freedom on Christmas Eve.

"Caesar's Palace 30th Anniversary Celebration" (8 p.m.-10 p.m., WMAR, Channel 2) -- A gaggle of ABC stars, including Drew Carey, Craig T. Nelson, Suzanne Somers, Joely Fisher and Craig T. Nelson, serve as hosts of this tribute to the Las Vegas showplace that's seen everything from heavyweight fights to joint performances by Lucille Ball and Carol Burnett to Evel Knievel unsuccessfully trying to jump his motorcycle over a fountain. Among the highlights: Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler and Thomas Hearns share a stage. ABC.

"Dennis the Menace" (8 p.m.-10 p.m., WBAL, Channel 11) -- Interesting cast: Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, Paul Winfield and, as the Wilsons, Walter Matthau and Joan Plowright. The movie's not much, although if any actor was born to play the irascible Mr. Wilson, it's Matthau. NBC.

"Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman" (8 p.m.-9 p.m., WJZ, Channel 13) -- In this repeat of September's season-opener, Dr. Quinn comes back from having her baby -- only to find that the townspeople may not really want her back, and the doctor who took her place doesn't really feel like leaving. CBS.

"A Celebration of American Music" (10 p.m.-11 p.m., WMAR, Channel 2) -- Tony Bennett, Stevie Wonder and Herbie Hancock are among the performers in this 10th anniversary salute to Washington's Thelonius Monk Institute. ABC.

"The Pretender" (10 p.m.-11 p.m., WBAL, Channel 11) -- Jarod (Michael T. Weiss) pretends to be head of security for a Las Vegas casino, the better to avenge the death of a murdered showgirl. While he's at it, Jarod even lends a helping hand to an Elvis impersonator who can't quite grind it the way he used to. NBC.


"Rodgers & Hammerstein: The Sound of Movies" (Noon-2 p.m., A&E;) -- Whether your favorite is "The King and I," "The Sound of Music" or "Oklahoma!", you're sure to find plenty of music from your favorite R&H; film in this tribute to their seven movie musicals.

"Cats" (10 p.m-midnight, A&E;) -- For cat lovers only. But don't miss it if you are.
