Photos of ghettos

Photographer Camilo Jose Vergara has been documenting urban ghettos since the 1970s, a project that now takes the form of an exhibit.

"The New American Ghetto: Photographs by Camilo Jose Vergara" opens Saturday at Maryland Art Place and reflects the artist's opinion that urban ghettos, "as intrinsic to the identity of the U.S. as New England villages, vast national parks, and leafy suburbs, nevertheless remain unique in their social and physical isolation from the nation's mainstream. ... Cityscapes that were once central to the life and identity of the nation are vanishing, raising fundamental questions: Do we need cities? Do we want cities? And how do we interpret what is left behind?"

The show is at Maryland Art Place, 218 W. Saratoga St., 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. It opens Saturday and runs through Feb. 22. Call (410) 962-8565.
