An elderly couple was killed yesterday on the Liberty Dam reservoir bridge near Eldersburg when their car was struck head-on by a pickup truck, said state police at the Westminster barracks.
The two people in the car, whose identities were being withheld pending notification of relatives, were pronounced dead at the scene shortly after the 6: 17 p.m. crash, according to police.
The unidentified driver of the pickup truck was flown by a state police MedEvac helicopter to Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where he was in critical condition, police said.
Witnesses told police they saw the pickup truck swerving from lane to lane before it crashed into the car on the bridge that separates Carroll and Baltimore counties.
The direction of travel for each vehicle was not immediately known, police said.
Police said the bridge -- also known as Liberty Road and as Route 26 -- was closed to eastbound and westbound traffic for at least three hours, and traffic was detoured to other roads.
