ARUNDEL MIDDLE School is collecting Giant and Giant pharmacy receipts through March 1.
The homeroom with the most receipts each month will receive ice cream at lunch. At the end of March, the homeroom that has the most receipts for the year will receive a pizza party. Last year, the school purchased two color inkjet printers, a color television, three volleyballs and two soccer balls through the supermarket chain's Apples for the Students program. While you do your holiday shopping, remember to save the receipts and send them in with your child, a neighbor's child, or drop them at the school office.
Greater Crofton Chamber of Commerce recently recognized Eddie Swann Jr. as its 1996 Business Leader of the Year during the third annual Crofton Award Banquet.
Swann has made a major contribution to the economy of Greater Crofton through his three businesses in the community, chamber officials said.
He opened a new shop for his family's glass business in Crofton in 1985; Eddie's Place, a restaurant, in 1986; and Economy Communications, a mobile phone distributorship, in 1994.
His businesses have 50 employees, many of whom have worked for him for more than six years.
Twice a year, he brings residents from Crofton Convalescent Center to Eddie's Place for lunch. He donates door prizes to many community events, as well as refreshments to the volunteers of the Kiwanis Blood Drive and Crofton Coalition for Christmas in April.
He sponsors an annual golf tournament for charity and donates his restaurant for sport teams' parties.
Swann is an active member of Greater Crofton Chamber of Commerce and has taken on a role in issues related to the Route 3 Task Force.
Swann lives in Crofton with his wife, Beth, who owns an insurance agency. They have three children, Billy, 24, who works at Economy Glass; Todd, 22, a junior at Frostburg State University; and David, 19, who is in the Air Force.
