Two county 5th-graders win pizza chain contest

Two Howard County fifth-graders were named winners in mamma ilardo's national Name the Veggie Gang competition.

Students at schools across the country were asked by the Baltimore-based pizza chain to submit names for the five vegetables in the company's Veggie Gang.

Matt Henry, a fifth-grader at Guilford Elementary School, entered the name Tony Tomato, and Chad Winner, a fifth-grader at Atholton Elementary School, submitted the name Bella Bell Pepper.

Both students won pizza parties for their classes. The company -- which has about 40 franchises -- plans to use the names as part of its marketing.

The three other winners were from schools in Catonsville, San Antonio and Dover, Del. The other winning names were Galileo Garlic, Olly Onion and Mario Mushroom.

Other Howard schools that participated in the contest included Bryant Woods, Dasher Green and Rockburn elementary schools. Schools that participated were provided by the company with kits that included posters and lessons about the importance of eating vegetables.
