Heat from lights suspected as cause of church fire

Heat from the lighting for a Nativity scene was the apparent source of a three-alarm blaze that caused about $150,000 worth of damage at a Middle River church, the Baltimore County Fire Department said yesterday.

The fire in the sanctuary of Cathedral of Praise Church of God, at 300 Middle River Road, was reported shortly before 10 p.m. Friday. Material simulating clouds for the Nativity scene appeared to have been ignited by heat from the lights, officials said.

Guests at a Christmas party in the church escaped unharmed, fire officials said.
