North Korea adds guards on border to stop escapes

SEOUL, South Korea -- North Korea has more than doubled the number of guards along its borders with China and Russia to stop escapees, the biggest group of defectors to flee the impoverished stalinist nation told a news conference yesterday.

"The number of personnel at each border post has been raised to 20 from eight," said Choi Young-ho, a North Korean border guard who guided the other 16 defectors, all from one family, across the Tumen River on the border with China.

Choi, 30, said the number of border posts had also been increased to one every 1.3 miles from one every 2.5 miles since September.
