New Year's Eve comes only once a year -- but at many venues

THE BALTIMORE SUN

This New Year's Eve promises to be one of the best ever. The following is only a sample of the different kinds of parties and dinners being offered. There's something for everyone, complete with festive decorations, streamers, noisemakers, dancing, fireworks, good food and champagne. Some are black tie, while others call for dressy attire, casual attire, or costumes and tattoos. Whatever your plans are to welcome 1997, have a great time and don't drink and drive.

BALTIMORE

Admiral Fell Inn, 888 S. Broadway, Fells Point. 9 p.m. New Year's package, $399 a couple plus taxes, includes dining and dancing in the inn's rooftop ballroom; midnight fireworks; buffet by Savannah; champagne all evening; open bar; valet parking; accommodations; and Savannah's New Year's Day brunch. $199 a couple for party only and $100 for singles; black tie optional. Belvedere Hotel, Charles Street at Chase. 8 p.m.-1 a.m. Truffles at the Belvedere is having a New Year's Eve gala in the grand ballroom; music by the Helmut Licht Orchestra; seated dinner choices of prime rib or chicken Belvedere; danish and coffee at 12: 30 a.m.; reservations a must; $70 a person, plus tax; black tie. Bicentennial Bash, Hyatt Regency Baltimore, 300 Light St. 8 p.m.-2 a.m. Black tie optional; music by the Klassix, Freddie Stevens and the Big Dog Band; buffet dinner served till midnight; open bar; hats; noisemakers; Inner Harbor fireworks; midnight champagne toast; $89 a person, limited seating. For $139 a couple, you can have dinner in Berry & Elliot's with a choice of appetizers, salads and entrees; champagne at midnight; or you can combine the dinner with bash tickets for $199 a couple. The hotel also offers a package deal that includes a guest room, $335-$475, or a suite, $650-$975, a couple; tickets to the bash; a bottle of champagne in your room. The Crystal Ball, the Warehouse at Harborview, 1225 Key Highway. 9 p.m. More than 1,000 people expected. A benefit for the South Baltimore Homeless Shelter; music by Tony Berry and New Money and the Delta Devils; catering by the Brass Elephant; cash bar for cocktails, but there will be complimentary wine, champagne and beer; fortune tellers are expected; black tie optional; $65 tickets must be bought in advance. Sheraton Inner Harbor, 300 S. Charles St. 9 p.m.-1 a.m. Ken and Suzanne Singleton and a host of Oriole legends will join partygoers. This package offers overnight accommodations; validated self parking; cocktails and appetizers; open bar; three-course dinner; Robert Mondavi wines; three-piece jazz combo and solo pianist; view of fireworks; desserts; champagne; bloody Mary brunch New Year's Day in McHenry's; late check-out. $199 per couple, $100 is tax-deductible and benefits the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation; black tie optional. Marriott's Hunt Valley Inn, 545 Shawan Road, Hunt Valley. 8 p.m.-1 a.m. Open bar; black-tie gala reception and dinner dance; appetizers; dinner served 9 p.m.; music by Fresh Air, a 10-piece band that plays big band as well as Top 10 from the '80s and '90s; champagne toast at midnight. $200 a couple plus tax and gratuity for the party; you can spend the night for $69 plus 13 percent hotel tax or $79, which includes breakfast for two. Simply Elegant New Year's Eve Bash, Oregon Ridge Park. 9 p.m.-2 a.m. The Owings Mills-based Simply Elegant Catering is sponsoring the event at Oregon Ridge. Dance music provided by Tim Oliver of Music Pak; open bar all night; champagne toast at midnight; buffet dinner 9 p.m.-12 a.m.; breakfast at 12: 30 a.m.; seating limited; $55 a person; black tie. Directions to Oregon Ridge: take Interstate 83 north, Exit 20B, Shawan Road west; go to first light, make a left turn on Beaver Dam Road, go half a mile, and Oregon Ridge is on right. HOWARD COUNTY

The overnight package with the gala is $260 a couple plus tax and gratuity. EASTERN SHORE
