The National Association of Realtors (NAR) and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development have signed a new fair housing partnership agreement to replace the Voluntary Affirmative Marketing Agreement that had been in effect for more than two decades.
The signing took place earlier this month at a meeting of organizations participating with HUD in the "National Partners in Home Ownership" plan to raise the nation's homeownership to a record 67.5 percent by the year 2000.
NAR is one of more than 50 organizations in the "Partners" plan. In their new agreement, HUD and the Realtors organization seek to identify fair housing issues, concerns and solutions.
The agreement sets up, on a national level, a model of discussion, planning and action that can be replicated at the community level, and calls for the federal agency and the Realtors to hold quarterly meetings on closing the gap in homeownership rates between whites and minorities.
In addition, they have outlined a program to address national homeownership strategy goals for 1997 that include up-to-date training for real estate professionals; developing a set of fair housing best practices; working closely with other industry and community-based organizations with an interest in fair housing; and encouraging the development of local fair housing partnerships.
"The Fair Housing Partnership Agreement applies the cooperative spirit of the national home ownership strategy to the area of fair housing," HUD Secretary Henry G. Cisneros said.
