Carter's 16 help Howard girls upset No. 3 Hammond, 52-49 Calvert Hall takes first loss in Gonzaga Classic; Basketball roundup


Chanelle Carter scored 16 points as visiting Howard upset No. 3 Hammond, 52-49, last night in girls basketball.

Carter, Stacey Swiney and Lisa Pasteur combined for 41 points for the Lions (2-2). Rene Hines had 16 for the Bears (1-1), who led 29-20 at halftime.

Milford Mill 75, Franklin 36: Chante Alexander notched 21 points as No. 11 Milford Mill coasted past visiting Franklin. Jenna Bradford added 19 points for the Millers.

Western 61, St. Frances 30: Marion Moore scored 16 and Crystal Falline added 13 as No. 13 Western (1-2) routed St. Frances (2-2) in the Greater Baltimore Women's Basketball Mixer.

Broadneck 33, Glen Burnie 24: Sarah Brino had 12 points and seven rebounds to lead No. 15 Broadneck (2-1) over visiting Glen Burnie. Amy Vandehei (six points) added 12 rebounds and eight steals for the Bruins.

Northern-Calvert 55, Meade 28: Katrina Mitchell scored 17 and sister Jen Mitchell added 13 to power the host Patriots (3-0) past No. 16 Meade (1-1).

Gwynn Lake 100, Northern 24: Sophomore guard Jimea Barner scored 29 points and sophomore guard Vonnell Baylor chipped in 22 as the Lakers (6-1) won easily.


Rice (N.Y.) 64, Calvert Hall 53: Juan Dixon's 28-point night was not enough and the Cardinals lost their first game of the season as Rice scored a first-round win in the Gonzaga Classic. Calvert Hall (4-1) trailed just 25-22 at halftime.

Southwestern 92, Edmondson 56: Junior guard Cornelius McMurray scored 35 points and set a career high with 10 three-pointers as No. 6 Southwestern dropped host Edmondson.

McMurray scored all of his points in the first three quarters before sitting out the fourth. Robert Gray added 15 points and 15 rebounds for the Sabers (3-0).

Mount St. Joseph 74, Fallston 42: Cory McNeill scored 10 to power No. 7 Mount St. Joseph (4-0) past host Fallston. Matt Juhasz led the Cougars with 13.

Aberdeen 63, North East 57: Tommy Mims and E.J. Henderson each scored 18 to power No. 8 Aberdeen (3-0) past visiting North East (1-2). The Eagles broke a 27-27 tie in the second half and had a 12-point lead at one point.

Arundel 79, Old Mill 67: Tony Ross scored a career-high 30 points to lift No. 12 Arundel (2-0) over visiting Old Mill. Joe Parker had 19 for the Wildcats, who held a one-point halftime lead.

Northern-Calvert 49, Meade 47: Brian Adams' short jumper with two seconds remaining helped visiting Northern-Calvert (2-1) edge the No. 18 Mustangs (1-2).

Meade's DeShawn Brown topped all scorers with 19 points.

Loyola 88, C. Milton Wright 46: Ryan Heacock scored 21, including four three-pointers, to lead No. 20 Loyola over C. Milton Wright. Carlos Somarriba added 12 points, and the Dons set a season high with 11 three-pointers.

Southern-AA 77, Great Mills 52: Jeff Crandell had 19 points as Southern-AA (2-1) came back to defeat visiting Great Mills (1-1). Dominique Medley added 13 for the Bulldogs, who trailed 36-32 at halftime.
