4-vehicle crash, water main break snarl traffic I-97 lanes closed during rush hour

Rush-hour traffic on Interstate 97 and Route 2 was snarled early yesterday because of a four-car pile-up on the highway near Glen Burnie and a water main break that created a 3-foot-wide hole in the northbound lanes of Solomons Island Road.

The northbound lanes of I-97 were closed for about a half-hour, creating a backup from the accident scene near the Baltimore-Annapolis Boulevard exit to the Route 50 interchange west of Annapolis, about 15 miles.

Two of the three northbound lanes of Route 2 -- Solomons Island Road -- were closed south of Aris T. Allen Boulevard while state and county crews repaired the broken water pipe. The closings caused a backup that stretched to the South River.

Sonya Alverta Parker, 26, of the 400 block of Summer Wind Way in Millersville, and her daughter Randi Denise Berry, 2, whose car overturned on I-97, were treated for minor injuries at North Arundel Hospital and released.

The problems began on Solomons Island Road about 6: 45 a.m. when a 12-inch water main broke, creating a hole in the road and leaving about 200 homes in Wilelinor Estates without water for about two hours while county workers repaired the line.

Six vehicles slammed into the hole before police arrived and closed lanes. Three vehicles had to be towed away, police said.

Road crews filled the hole by midmorning and will return today to repave. weather permitting, a State Highway Administration maintenance engineer said. They plan to reopen the closed section of the road today.

About 45 minutes after the water main broke, a 1985 Nissan Sentra driven by Parker struck the rear of a 1994 Saturn driven by Jennifer J. Scruggs, 26, of the 300 block of Valiant Court in Glen Burnie as both cars were traveling north in a construction area on I-97 near the Baltimore-Annapolis Boulevard exit, state police said.

The Sentra was struck in the rear by a 1988 Nissan pickup truck driven by Charles W. Hornbeck, Jr., 48, of the 300 block of Chalet Drive in Millersville, hit a barrier and overturned. Hornbeck's truck was struck in the rear by a 1987 Pontiac driven by Kevin Thomas Lynch, 22, of the 400 block of Chalet Drive West in Millersville.

Scruggs, Hornbeck, and Lynch were not injured. Police closed both northbound lanes.
