County police arrested a Brooklyn Park man Tuesday and charged him with beating his neighbor to death with a baseball bat Monday during an argument over a $20 debt.
David Scott Samuel, 19, of the 900 block of First Ave. was charged with first-degree murder in the slaying of David Michael Gordon, 40. Samuel was being held without bond last night at the county detention center.
Gordon's body was found in the living room of his home in the 100 block of Townsend Ave. about 9 p.m. Monday by his 8-year-old son and his estranged wife, who was delivering a birthday card to him. Interviews with Gordon's neighbors and friends linked Samuel to the slaying, according to District Court charging documents.
Police said Samuel accused Gordon of owing him $20 during an argument early Monday. The charging documents say Gordon's assailant grabbed a wooden baseball bat and hit him three times in the head.
Police said they found the bat and other items from Gordon's house when they searched Samuel's house, according to the charging documents.
Samuel was arrested at a friend's home in the 200 block of Magothy Beach Road about 7 p.m. Tuesday. He was on probation after being convicted in December 1995 of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
In that case, Samuel was ordered to pay $700 in restitution but had not paid the money as of Friday, court records show.
Doug Gordon, David Gordon's father, said it was a consolation that someone was arrested, the elder Gordon said. "But it doesn't bring my son back. Whatever the outcome, it doesn't change the fact that a father and a son and a friend is not here."
He said the bat used to kill his son belonged to Devon Gordon, the dead man's son.
