Mount Airy man killed in four-car collision

A Mount Airy man was killed yesterday morning in a four-car collision south of Westminster, when another driver crossed the center line and their cars collided, state police said.

A 1987 Ford Taurus driven by Richard Thomas McVicker, 22, of Littlestown, Pa., crossed the center line about 7 a.m., while heading south on Ridge Road (Route 27) in a rural, 50-mph zone north of Old Westminster Road, police said.

The Taurus collided with a northbound 1991 Dodge Dynasty driven by Kenneth Allen Hands, 33, of the 5300 block of Pommel Drive in Mount Airy.

Both men were taken by helicopter to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where Hands was pronounced dead. McVicker was in serious but stable condition last night, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Two other northbound vehicles were involved in the accident, police said.

A 1980 Chevrolet Malibu driven by Kenneth Reed Getz Jr., 43, of the 2400 block of Gillis Road in Mount Airy collided with the Taurus. Getz was taken by ambulance to Carroll County General Hospital, where he was treated and released.

A 1990 Dodge Dakota driven by Gary Russell Green, 42, of the 2200 block of Deer Park Road in Finksburg collided with the Dodge. Green was not injured, police said.

Winfield: Firefighters responded at 8: 25 a.m. Monday for an auto fire in the 1300 block of West Old Liberty Road.
