Prisoner flees hospital after subduing guard

THE BALTIMORE SUN

A prisoner who complained of a medical problem escaped from Maryland General Hospital in Baltimore on Saturday evening after overpowering a guard, said a state public safety spokeswoman.

Ronald Lamont Ward, 54, of the 1400 block of N. Rosedale St. in West Baltimore had been in custody at the Central Booking and Intake Center since last month on charges of failing to return a car and unauthorized use of the vehicle, said Barbara Cooper, a spokeswoman for the Maryland Division of Pretrial Detention and Services.

Ward was taken to the hospital Thursday after complaining of chest pain, Cooper said. At about 7: 30 p.m. Saturday, he escaped from Maryland General, where he was being watched by Correctional Officer Nathan Colbert, she said.

"The inmate overpowered one of our correctional officers who was assigned to hospital watch," Cooper said. The incident is being investigated by correctional officials, Cooper said.

State and Baltimore police and the U.S. Marshal's Fugitive Task Force are searching for Ward.

Ward was arrested Nov. 14 and held in lieu of $7,500 bail, Cooper said.
