Police investigating noose found in firefighter's pocket

The discovery of a rope noose in the coat pocket of a black Baltimore County firefighter at the Towson station is being investigated by Baltimore County police as a possible hate crime, authorities said yesterday.

"Because of the seriousness of this incident, we felt it would be better to immediately refer it to the Baltimore County Police Department,' said Battalion Chief Mark Hubbard, of the county Fire Department. Firefighter James Shelton, an eight-year veteran at the Towson fire station, discovered the rope noose shortly after 7 p.m. Friday when it fell from his coat pocket, Hubbard said.

Shelton found a noose on his coat hook Tuesday, Hubbard said.
