City used two free throws with eight seconds left to escape with a 58-56 win in boys basketball yesterday over No. 18 Douglass.
City (1-1) trailed, 32-29, at halftime but outscored the visiting Ducks 13-7 in the third quarter to take its first lead of the game at 42-39. Douglass (0-1) battled back to tie the game at 56 with 10 seconds left on sophomore forward Joe Ison's basket.
Omar Smith led the Knights with 17 points, and 7-foot center Derrick Goode added 13 points, 13 rebounds and five blocked shots. Lee Reliford had a team-high 17 points for the Ducks.
Centennial 62, C. Milton Wright 38: The Eagles' Matt Laycock led all scorers with 15 points, and Aaron Williams and Scott Bross each added 11 as the visiting No. 13 Eagles cruised. Scott Rudolph's 14 points led Wright.
St. Paul's 66, Archbishop Spalding 63: Justin Singleton had 22 points and 19 rebounds and hit a jumper with seven seconds left to make a 64-63 lead 66-63 as No. 20 St. Paul's (2-0) turned back Spalding (1-1) in overtime.
St. Mary's 54, Mount de Sales 26: Tiffany Schummer scored 11 as No. 2 St. Mary's downed visiting Mount de Sales.
Milford Mill 59, St. Frances 40: Chante Alexander scored a game-high 24 points to lead the No. 12 Millers to victory. Crystal Dent added 11 and Jenna Bradford 10 for Milford Mill.
Towson 56, Poly 23: Jaimee Reynolds scored 14 to power No. 18 Towson past Poly. Lindsay Buchanan and Megan Kanski each " added 11 for the Generals.
