A Perry Hall man charged with stealing a Baltimore County Fire Department vehicle was released on his own recognizance yesterday by a District Court commissioner, county police said.
Dudley Johnson, 34, of the first block of Park Hall Place was charged with stealing a red and white 1991 Chevrolet Suburban at the Carney Village Shopping Center in the 9600 block of Harford Road about 9 p.m. Wednesday, police said.
The driver of the Suburban, Lt. Steve Adelsberger, an emergency medical services supervisor, told police that he left the keys in the ignition but the engine was off when he entered a business at the shopping center to talk to a friend.
Officer Ralph Volk of the Parkville Precinct said Johnson, a window salesman, told him he took the vehicle because he was cold and that his cab had not arrived.
Volk said Johnson told him that the engine was running when he took the Suburban.
Johnson drove three miles to his home and called WJZ-TV and told a station employee about the theft and that he was home. The station called police, who arrested Johnson about 9: 30 p.m. outside his home as he walked his dog and continued to talk to someone from the station on a portable phone.
