Brown's spurt turns back Loyola, 74-63 Lehigh routs Retrievers in UMBC tourney, 70-53; State women


Brown used a 16-2 run in the first half on the way to a 74-63 win over Loyola yesterday in the consolation game of the Dead River Classic.

Brown's Vita Redding led all scorers with 23 points, and teammate Liz Turner added 22.

Mary Anne Kirsch paced Loyola with 23 points.

The Greyhounds (0-3) drew within three points twice in the second half, once after a three-point play by Kirsch with 9: 51 left, but were outscored 7-1 over the next five minutes.

Brown is 2-2.

Lehigh 70, UMBC 53: Forward Jen Hendrix scored 18 points to lead five Engineers in double figures in an opening-round win in the UMBC Invitational.

Danielle Baldwin scored 13 points and Alexis Bevington chipped in 11; Christina Henry and Kelly Madden each scored 10.

The Engineers raced out to a 10-2 lead and never looked back. UMBC got as close as 50-42 with 8: 13 remaining but Lehigh

went on a 20-11 run to pull away.

Kendra Damann led the Retrievers with 15 points, and Monica Logan led all rebounders with 10. UMBC and Delaware State meet in the consolation game today at 1 p.m.

Gallaudet 94, Villa Julie 32: Dawn Birley was one of six Gallaudet players to score in double figures in a rout at Villa Julie.

Each Gallaudet player scored at least four points, and the team totaled 20 steals and took advantage of 27 Villa Julie turnovers. ,, Natalie Smith led Villa Julie with 11 points.
