25 years ago (week of Nov. 28-Dec. 4, 1971):

The Howard County Council received notification from the State Highway Administration that funding would be made available for construction of the proposed overpass interchange at new Maryland Route 175 and U.S. 29.

A group of citizens formed a committee to seek improvement in the English program in Howard secondary schools. The group was concerned about the poor performance of eighth- and 10th-graders on a recent standardized test.

50 years ago (week of Nov. 24-30, 1946):

It was announced that Howard County's property tax rate for 1947 would be $1.75 per $100 of assessed value, up from $1.50 per $100. The increase was necessary to cover the addition of nearly $46,000 to the school budget, salary increases for county employees and additional budget for the county's volunteer fire departments.

Newly elected county officials were sworn into office, including Clerk of Court Milton W. Baxley and commissioners J. Frank Curtis, Charles E. Miller and F. Walter Scott.
