Arnold man charged with assault, traffic violations in long police chase

Howard County and Mass Transit Administration police yesterday charged a 38-year-old Anne Arundel County man with six counts of assault and three counts of traffic violations after a pursuit Friday from the Jones Falls Expressway into Howard County.

Allen David Rugieri of the 700 block of Harmony Lane in Arnold is being held on $250,000 bail at the Howard County Detention Center in Jessup.

Friday's chase began near a West North Avenue light rail stop in Baltimore, when a transit officer tried to pull over a car.

The car headed north on the Jones Falls Expressway to the Baltimore Beltway, police said. On the Beltway, it went to the Northwest Expressway, turned around and went back to the Beltway, got on Interstate 70 and then Route 29 south, where it was stopped near a fast-food restaurant at U.S. 1 and Guilford Road in Howard County, police said.

Baltimore police, involved briefly in the chase, criticized MTA police over their radios for their handling of the pursuit.
