Police investigating hate-bias incident

Howard County police are trying to find out who put Ku Klux Klan literature on a North Laurel man's car Friday morning. Police have classified it as a hate-bias incident.

A 29-year-old African-American man who lives on Glen Hannah Drive in North Laurel found a sheet of printed Ku Klux Klan material on the windshield of his sports car Friday, said Sgt. Steven Keller, a police spokesman.

No other literature was found in the area, he said.

The mother of the 29-year-old man said she was surprised at such hate in her neighborhood. "It's been a nice neighborhood," said the woman, who did not want her name used. "We've never had any racial problems since we moved here in 1988."

There have been 59 reported hate-bias incidents in Howard County this year.

Two men are charged with soliciting prostitution

A 46-year-old Mississippi man and a 40-year-old Pennsylvania man were charged Thursday with soliciting prostitution after a Howard County police sting at the Truckers' Inn in Jessup.

Robert Farris Shumpert of Shannon, Miss., and Dale Eugene Campbell of Manheim, Pa., were charged with seeking sexual favors from an undercover female officer at the truck stop in the 7400 block of Assateague Drive, charging documents show.

Shumpert also was charged with marijuana possession, charging documents show.

Both were released on their personal recognizance.

Earlier this month, eight men were arrested along Assateague Drive in the Maryland Food Warehouse Center near the Truckers' Inn after they solicited various sex acts for money from undercover female police officers.

All eight -- some of whom were truck drivers passing through the area -- were charged with solicitation of prostitution and were released the same day on their own recognizance.

The Truckers' Inn has been the target of anti-prostitution stings for several years.
