Jay Leno's 'Chin' may be falling flat on its face

Jay Leno's much-hyped book may be "Leading With My Chin," but it's nowhere near leading the best-seller list.

In its first few weeks in stores, Leno's memoir of his childhood and nomadic years as a stand-up comic hasn't lived up to the hopes of publisher HarperCollins, which gave the comic a reported $4.1 million advance. "Chin" was ranked 21st among all hardcovers sold in the Waldenbooks chain the week of Oct. 19, and the 16th-biggest non-fiction hardcover in the Barnes & Noble chain. The book was expected to reach No. 37 last week, up from 72 last week, on USA Today's national best-seller list.

Meanwhile, another big-ticket book that appears to be selling below expectations is Johnnie L. Cochran Jr.'s "Journey to Justice," for which O.J. Simpson's defense attorney was paid an estimated $3.5 million.

Word is that Cochran's memoir will vanish from the New York Times national best-seller list Sunday.

Was that woman proposing to Robert Redford?

When Robert Redford opened up the floor to questions at a fund-raiser for Minnesota Sen. Paul Wellstone Saturday night, one woman got up.

"Are you married?" she asked.

Redford shook his head and laughed. "What are you going to do about it if I'm not," he said slyly.

Redford, an environmentalist who watches politics closely, denounced ads for Wellstone's Republican challenger, Rudy Boschwitz, that label the incumbent as "embarrassingly liberal."

"If liberal means you're for child care, for education, for the environment, then I'm happy to be liberal," Redford said.

Friends are bearing gifts to Madonna's Lourdes

Still wondering what to get for Lourdes, Madonna's new tot? In Style magazine offered some tips from people who have already bought gifts for the newborn.

Rosie O'Donnell and Rita Wilson selected the same navy cardigan ($99) and both paired it with a handful of patterned socks. Christopher Ciccone, Madonna's brother, bought her a mod scooter ($85) from a New York.

But the pop superstar says her best gift -- from her sister -- was the most functional: a big indented sponge to place baby on during bath time.

Kassebaum and Baker will marry after election

They're done with the Senate and ready to set up their own house: Sen. Nancy Landon Kassebaum has confirmed that she will marry former Tennessee Sen. Howard Baker.

Kassebaum said Friday that she will wait until after the Nov. 5 election to announce the wedding date and other specifics.

Kassebaum, 64, did not seek re-election this year and will complete her third six-year term in the Senate in January.

Baker, 70, also served 18 years in the Senate, ending as Senate majority leader in 1985, and was briefly White House chief of staff for Ronald Reagan. He left that job in mid-1988 to help his ailing wife, Joy, who died of cancer in 1993. He now practices law in Tennessee and Washington.

Kassebaum was divorced from attorney Phil Kassebaum in 1979, about six months after winning election to the Senate.

Miss Canada is charged with barroom assault

So much for Miss Congeniality. Danielle House, the reigning Miss Canada, has been charged with assaulting another woman in a barroom brawl.

House was to appear in Newfoundland Provincial Court on charges that she punched the woman in a Newfoundland university bar last week. House, 20, was charged by police after a 20-year-old woman complained, saying she suffered facial injuries and a chipped tooth during the attack.

House won the Miss Canada title this year and was scheduled to attend the Miss World International pageant in Jamaica on Nov. 15. Pageant officials say they still expect her to go.
