Sears, Roebuck and Co. will become the fourth anchor store at Marley Station Mall when it opens Nov. 2. Meanwhile, another Sears five miles north of the mall on Ritchie Highway will close and transfer its 230 employees to the new store.
The company hopes its longtime customers will follow Sears to the new location, said Leslie Wendorf, general manager of the Marley Station store.
"We want to bring them from the Glen Burnie store to this store, which has much more space for them," she said.
The Sears at Ritchie Highway and Ordnance Road, which has about 90,000 square feet, will close Nov. 1, said Wendorf. The new Marley Station Sears will be a two-level, 197,000-square-foot store and automotive center. It will hire an additional 120 employees, she said.
Yesterday, crews worked on wiring, painting, stocking and preparing displays at the new store.
Sears is the second department store added at the mall since Marley Station opened in 1987. Macy's and Hecht's were the original anchors. J.C. Penney opened two years ago.
The addition of Sears "gives great balance to stores already here," said Ed Ladd, the mall's general manager. "Sears made sense."
The new look of Sears, which includes an expanded women's department, is part of the retailer's five-year, $4 billion plan to reshape its image from a mass merchandiser to a full-line department store that carries fashionable clothing.
As part of its companywide change, Sears has been renovating or closing old stores. The store Sears is closing in Glen Burnie was built in the 1960s.
Merchants at Marley Station are welcoming the national retailer.
"I'm sure it's going to pull people in. Their product line will be a very nice complement to the mall. We're looking forward to it," said David Johnson, owner of Koenig Art Emporium.
Gayle Gibson, co-owner of Gift Baskets by Weaver, said Sears' automotive center and other specialty departments will be a nice addition to the mall and should help draw customers.
"I'm looking forward to it myself because I do a little bit of shopping at Sears," she said.
